Recent Lake Texoma News![]() 3-20-06 - An Ardmore man reeled in one for the record books in February. Sean Chatham reeled for over 35 minutes to bring in a 184 lb alligator gar to shore from the Red River in Love County. The gar measured in at 7’8 and had more than a 3-foot girth. Oklahoma Wildlife biologists say it is a state record beating out a 180 lb gar caught from the Red River back in 2002.
![]() The Beginning of Striper Fishing on Lake Texoma a story found in a 1969 edition of a Lake Texoma Vacation Guide NOTE TO ANGLERS: Some 100 salt water stripers ranging from 3 to 12 pounds were planted in the lake in 1965. They are off-limits to anglers. If they are accidentally caught, anglers are asked to carefully release them after noting where they were caught and the approximate size. While they may appear to look at first glance somewhat like a sandie, they are a longer shape and soon, of course, will be much bigger. When biologists check their spawning habits and determine whether or not they have reproduced, then the season and limits will be established. ![]() The lake holds many surprises for first-time visitors. For example, who would expect a string of islands with sandy beaches? Or bald eagles? The islands are especially popular on summer weekends - they're the place to "see and be seen." Bald eagle watching is a popular autumn activity. Several charter companies offer special tours to view these majestic birds. Lake Texoma is great for all types of boating from power to sail. There's usually so much activity you can be entertained just watching all the boats on the lake. Personal watercraft, water skiers and wind surfers all consider the lake an excellent place to have fun. The serpentine shape of the lake creates plenty of sheltered coves so it's always possible to find a calm, quiet spot even on the windiest days. You'll find any type of boat available to rent or to buy - from personal watercraft to ski boats to party barges and houseboats. Of course, mention Lake Texoma to a fishing enthusiast and they'll immediately think "striper!" Texoma is famous for excellent fishing for striped bass and other species. Plenty of professional fishing guides are available to ensure a great experience whether you're a novice or a seasoned angler. ![]() This area is an immense playground - even off the water. Two wildlife refuges, two state parks, fifty-four U.S Army Corps of Engineers - managed parks, twenty-six resorts and hundreds of campgrounds surround the lake. Texoma's newest golf course, Chickasaw Pointe, brings a whole new level of excitement to an area already known for outstanding golf. Lake Texoma enjoys a well - deserved reputation as a major sailing lake. The expansive lake is deep, with miles of sailing shoreline dotted with plenty of great anchoring spots on sandy beaches or in secluded coves. Some of the best places are only accessible by water. The lakeside terrain varies from dramatic rocky cliffs to tree - covered slopes, adding to the sailing experience. If you want to sail, but don't own a boat, there are several charter companies on the lake that can provide a vessel. You'll find selections ranging from 25 to 48 feet in length complete with accommodations for living or just picnicking. All you'll need to pack is your food and gear. If you've only dreamed of sailing, you can charter a boat with an instructor to see what it's like. If you discover that this is the life for you, the charter companies offer lessons to get you started. Lessons usually consist of three days on the water or two nights in a classroom and one day on the water. ![]() ![]() This 89,000 acre lake on the Red River is shared by Texas and Oklahoma.
